“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.”
Hello, I’m Tamara Casby — a self-taught artist. I work primarily in acrylic, watercolor, graphite, and charcoal. I started my creative journey as a representational artist. I am drawn to depicting the natural world — especially birds, landscapes, and botanicals. Through my work, I seek to explore the dialogue between natural processes and the human experience.
More recently, my creative practice has expanded to include more expressive approaches. There was a point where I found myself unable to convey what I wanted to communicate when creating representational work. I started experimenting with ways to operate outside of the constraints of form. After much exploration, I found that working in this unbound, abstracted way ultimately gave me the freedom and flexibility of expression that I was looking for.
The sky has become my latest muse. These pieces are attempts to hold the transient—to capture fleeting moments of light, color, and motion. These phenomena shift and dissolve in ephemeral dances right before our eyes, much like thought, emotion, and time. My skies invite viewers to both lose themselves and find themselves in the shifting rhythms of the clouds. Each piece serves as a reflection on presence, transformation, and the beautiful heartbreak that is impermanence.
I currently live in New Orleans, LA with my husband, my daughter, and my cat. I draw continual inspiration from the skies above me, the land below me, and the inner landscapes of my imagination.
Art offers the gift of presence - the opportunity to reconnect to something within oneself.
I hope my work will lead you there.
